Sewing Desk

This desk was a freebie. It was unwanted in it’s old home, and I usually don’t turn away freebies. It is a computer desk that was used in a credit union. It lived in my daughter’s room for quite a while, but it is huge, and her room is small. It was taking up too much space. I put it in the corner behind the door in my room, and waited to decide what to do with it. It started to accumulate stuff, including a sewing machine, and I thought, hmm, this is a handy place to sew. I don’t actually like sewing, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
I started to clean up the space to make it a nice sewing corner, and thought if the sewing machine is going to sit out, it needs to look nice.
I made a little cover for the sewing machine.
I made it reversible, so I had two pieces of material and some braiding on the edge that I stitched together.
Now I am trying to decide whether to leave the sides open, put ribbon on to tie the sides closed, or stitch the sides closed. I can’t decide, so it is staying as is for now.

Making sun tea today. It’s nice to have the sun do all of the work while I go roller skating with my son’s class for his end of year party.
I put in 12 cups of water, almost 1 cup of sugar, and 4 tea bags. When it was done in the sun, I added 4 cups of ice to cool it off.
I just got this canister
at Target yesterday and thought it was the perfect size for sun tea. It is made of glass which I think is probably better than a plastic one. I have a bigger one that was given to me as a gift, but it is HUGE, and can hardly even fit in the sink to wash. This one is a much more manageable size. Mine is about 5 liters, or 1 1/2 gallons. It is smaller than many out there. I couldn't find a direct link to it, so I linked to something close.

Meet My Adopted Son Fred

We went to the tide pools today in Laguna Beach. It was beautiful. We had just started looking at things when I saw this little guy in the water.
He is a little sea lion pup. He started to come up on the rocks, so we just sat down and watched him and took pictures.
He was washed around on the rocks a bit by the waves.
He slowly worked his way higher and higher on the rocks.
He eventually got to a comfortable spot and lay down to take a nap. He was shivering and exhausted. We hung out for a long time to make sure that nobody bothered him.
He slowly dried off.
He was so close to us. It was a really precious moment.
I hope that my new son Fred finds his biological mother today. I am very worried about him and feel a special bond to him. I felt bad when I had to abandon my new son there on the rocks, but I know that it is the best place for him. I hope that me guarding him while he slept and got his energy back will make it easier for him to find his mother when he is ready to go back into the water. Be strong young Fred, and stay away from sharks.

Very Expensive Book

My son is currently reading one of my favorite books from childhood called Eli and the Tiger
, by Bruce Van Blair. It was written in 1974, and has been out of print for a very long time. We lost our signed copy from childhood, but my brother found a copy at a used book store a few years ago and got it for me. He is so thoughtful. So, my 8 year old has been reading this book for his next book report, and has been taking it to school and misplacing it around the house. I don’t want to lose this copy because this book is hard to come by.
Today I did a web search to see if I could find the book any where, and I did find it on Amazon. For $98.00. Oh my. Should my son be carrying this expensive book around with him? Yes. It is just a book after all. Once he is done with it though, it is going in a special place on the bookshelf. Ouch! $98.00.By the way, the story in the book is very good. Eli is an elephant, and the tiger is ….. a tiger. They are separated when they are young from all of the other animals and become friends with each other, not knowing that elephants and tigers are not supposed to be friends.
When they get back to the other animal societies, they are up against a lot of prejudice and animosity from the other animals.
Sorry, you can’t read it though because I doubt that you will pay $98.00 for it, and I’m not sharing my copy.
I did an Amazon search and they do have it on kindle
though, but of course you have to have a kindle.

Book Review: The Lightning Thief

Anyway, back to the book. For anyone who has been living under a rock and doesn’t know the plot yet, I will give a brief synopsis.
The book is set in current times and the Greek gods are real, but they have adapted to modern society a bit. There is a ruckus about Zeus’ master lightning bolt being stolen and Percy and two of his friends have to go on a mission to get it back before the gods go to war.
The book is action packed with humor around every corner. It is great for all ages. My daughter at 12 has read it so many times that she practically has it memorized, and my 8 year old son has read it too. It took him a bit longer to get through it, but he really enjoyed it.
As with most books, it has much more in it than the movie does.
LOVE the book. Of course, the rest of the series is great too.

Bike Accessory Jealousy

Edit Post
Well, I am making plans for the purchase of bike accessories that I will make when we get home.
My sister in law has a cool basket that goes on the back of her bike. I also love the little baskets that hook on the front of a bike.
We have little front soft carriers on the front of our bikes that definitely need to be replaced. A bear ripped one open two years ago and destroyed the zipper, but we are still using it. Time for an upgrade.
My father in law has a cool saddle bag arrangement on the back of his bike. The same bear got into those that year, but didn’t destroy his. If I do the saddlebags on my daughter’s bike, she could ride to school and fit all of her books in (maybe).
I will be passing along our cool bike accessory. It is the Trail-gator. It tows a kid’s bike behind the adult bike. My brother in law and sister in law are ready for it for their 4 year old who is currently being towed in a trailer. Next year she will be ready to be towed on a bike.
Time to go shopping.
